Privacy Policy
Effective October 20, 2026
Flyover Country LLC (“we,” “us,” or
“our”) operates the Outcrop mobile application and
outcrop.rocks (together, the “Services”). This policy
explains what information the Services use and how it is handled. It
applies to the app published as “Outcrop”, with the
application identifier rocks.outcrop.app on iOS and
Android.
Information used by the app
- Location. With your permission, the app uses your precise location while it is open to show the geology where you stand and to line up Live with the land. We do not keep a history of your location on any server. To describe the ground at a place, the app sends that place’s coordinates, the place you are standing or a place you tapped, to the services that answer for it (Macrostrat, the Flyover Country regions service, and the USGS and USDA map services). Map tiles are requested for the area on screen.
- Camera. With your permission, Live shows the camera picture with the geologic map drawn over it. Camera frames are processed on your device by ARKit or ARCore. Outcrop does not record, store or upload photos or video from the camera.
- Motion. On iOS, with your permission, the app reads the phone’s motion activity to tell when you are riding in a vehicle, so Live can follow the land from a moving car. This is processed on your device and not sent anywhere.
- Saved Areas and preferences. Areas you save, their maps and terrain, and your settings are stored on your device. You can delete a saved area in the app; uninstalling the app removes its locally stored data, subject to your device platform’s backup behavior.
- Feedback. If you send feedback from the app, it opens an email in your own mail app, and we receive what you choose to send.
On Android, Live runs on Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), which is provided by Google and governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Accounts, advertising, and analytics
The app does not require an account and does not ask for your name, email address, contacts, or payment information. It has no analytics or crash-reporting service, and Mapbox’s telemetry is turned off. We do not use third-party advertising, sell personal information, or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Online services and service providers
The Services contact third parties for maps, geologic and soil data, terrain, place names and reference content. Those providers receive the information needed to answer a request and may also receive standard network information such as your IP address, user agent, and request time. They process it under their own terms and privacy policies. They include Mapbox, Macrostrat (University of Wisconsin–Madison), the Paleobiology Database, Mapterhorn, OpenFreeMap, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Cloudflare, which hosts our own map tiles, and Wikimedia projects.
We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect the Services or their users, or complete a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.
The website
outcrop.rocks has no user accounts or contact forms and does not run advertising or an analytics tracker. Its host may retain ordinary request logs for security and reliability. The landing page loads its 3D library from jsDelivr, so visiting it also makes a request there.
Retention and your choices
Local app data remains until you delete it or uninstall the app. Server logs are retained only as long as reasonably needed for security, troubleshooting, and operation of the Services, subject to provider retention practices and legal requirements. You can deny or revoke camera, location and motion access in your device settings. Some features will not work without the related permission.
Security and international processing
We use reasonable safeguards designed to protect information, but no electronic service is completely secure. Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries where they operate.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the Services change. We will post the revised policy here and update the effective date above.
